To secure the Year 4’s understanding of the functions of the different organs in the digestive system, we recreated what happens to food as it travels through the body. With a simple jam sandwich, we used scissors and mashers to act as our teeth, a funnel and a plastic bag to represent our oesophagus and stomach (with cola as stomach acid), before the food entered our small intestine – the leg from a pair of tights! It was a great way to reinforce how the digestive system works and the children thoroughly enjoyed it!
